What are allergens - Hayfever?

Hayfever is commonly known as Allergic Rhinitis.

It is the body’s abnormal reaction to foreign material that it comes into contact with. This is normally pollen (from wind pollinated plants), seasonal plants or grasses and seeds.

Hayfever is prevalent mostly in spring and fall months with it easing off as autumn and winter approach.

Hayfever attacks are most common on hot, windy days. This is because during damp days, moisture sticks to the air borne pollen, pulling it safely down to the ground.

Hayfever is a condition which can be passed down from previous generations. This means that if one of your parents or ancestors has or had hayfever, you have a higher risk of developing this condition. This is known as a hereditary predisposition or atopy.

Hayfever can be classified into two subdivisions:

  1. Seasonal Hayfever – This type of allergy is linked to flowering or pollen seasons and usually does not occur during the winter months.
  2. Perennial Hayfever – Occurs all year round including winter as well as summer.

Symptoms of Hayfever
  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery, red eyes
  • Eyes may be puffy
  • Congestion or a stuffy nose
  • Rhinitis (Runny nose)
  • Sneezing
  • Itching of the affected area
  • Headaches
  • Blurry vision and sensitivity to light
  • Snoring
  • Post nasal drip and constant clearing of the throat
  • Hives or rashes on the skin

How can one tell if they have allergies?

There are a couple of steps one can take to identify if they have allergies or not:

  1. Monitor your condition. What makes the symptoms better and what makes them worse? Remember ones diet can also play a factor in allergies.
  2. Skin testing may be done by doctors to identify what one is allergic to. In this instance, a small amount of the allergen substance is placed on the skin and any reactions are recorded.
  3. Blood may be drawn by doctors and sent to the Laboratories to identify if one has any allergies and what causes these allergies.

Tips for your garden when planting with Hayfever
  • Try planting insect-pollinated plants instead of wind-pollinated plants. This is because insect pollinated plants have large, heavy pollen which seldom becomes airborne and should therefore not cause one to experience an allergic attack.
  • Avoid planting the following in ones garden: Birch, willow, poplar or olive trees. Rye, and timothy grasses and ragweed, nettle or fat hen weeds.
  • Avoid bringing freshly cut flowers into one home.
  • Those suffering with hayfever should ensure that they have a minimal area of lawn. Try using paving and pebbles when planning you garden instead of turf.
