Post Nasal Drip

Post Nasal Drip occurs when excess mucus flows down the back of your throat instead of unconsciously out of your nasal passages. This mucus may be clear or infected and can cause throat irritations, bacterial infections, gastric conditions and even interfere with one's immune system.

Symptoms of Post Nasal Drip

  • Continuous and Recurrent Coughing
  • Sore Throats
  • Constant clearing of the throat
  • Mucus stuck at the back of the throat
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Interference in voice clarity and pitch
  • Thick, clear or yellow/green nasal mucus
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Bowel Pains and Diarrhoea

Causes of Post Nasal Drip

When there is an invasion or disturbance in the system the body's natural defence mechanisms kick in and mucus production starts increasing. Mucus is designed to trap dust, foreign particles and bacteria. It is designed to keep germs out of the system by expelling these. When mucus production is too much to drain through the nasal passages it is forced to drip down the throat. This is post nasal drip.

Complications of untreated Post Nasal Drip

Untreated post nasal drip may lead to bronchitis, pneumonia, sinus infections and full blown systematic infections.

Why does Post Nasal Drip lead to coughing?

Whilst sleeping, a person usually lies on his or her back (supine). This position makes it difficult for mucus to be effectively removed from the nasal passages and sinus cavities. The mucus that is unable to drain will converge in pools around the airways and vocal cords, resulting in an irritation or inflammation. It is this irritation that can lead to the development of a sore or hoarse throat, coughing and a partial or complete loss of one's voice.
